Adams handed Sevilla lifeline ahead of new season

Ex-Flying Eagles striker Akor Adams is set to be registered for the 2025/26 La Liga campaign by Sevilla, as the club prepares for the imminent departure of Juanlu Sánchez to Italian side Napoli, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 25-year-old, who had been vacationing in Tanzania, cut short his holiday last month in a bid to continue his recovery from injury in Seville before the start of the forthcoming season. He joined the Andalusian side in a four-and-a-half-year deal during the January winter transfer window worth €5.5m from French Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier, but was hampered by injury and fitness problems for the better part of the second half of the season, which limited him to just four La Liga appearances.

Despite his underwhelming start to life in Spain, the seven-time UEFA Europa League champions are offering Adams the opportunity to start afresh ahead of the upcoming campaign. He has been undergoing medical evaluations and physical therapy with the club’s rehabilitation staff upon his return from vacation, prior to the official resumption of his teammates for pre-season activities.

Sevilla, who are currently under heavy financial constraint, are banking on the sale of Juanlu Sánchez to reigning Serie A champions Napoli, which could open the way for them to register four of their players, including Adams, Rubén Vargas, and the new signings from this summer in Alfon González and Gabriel Suazo.

According to Spanish media outlet Estadio Deportivo, “Everything indicates that this week the negotiations between Sevilla and Napoli for Juanlu Sánchez will come to an end. The Montequinto full-back has had a personal agreement with the Italian club for weeks, waiting for both entities to reach an agreement to sign until 2030 with the Serie A champions.”

“In the meantime, the youth player continues to work with total professionalism, awaiting news, which could arrive very soon as the latest information indicates that the agreement is practically closed for a fixed amount of 17 million euros, in addition to variables or a percentage of a future sale that is currently being discussed between 10 per cent and 20 per cent according to Diario de Sevilla,” the outlet concluded.

Matías Almeyda’s men are currently fine-tuning preparations ahead of the season and will face German outfit Schalke 04 in a pre-season friendly encounter on Saturday, July 26, at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

Upon the commencement of the new campaign, Adams could face competition from Isaac Romero and returning loanees Kelechi Iheanacho and Rafa Mir for a starting berth.
