Rivers United coach Finidi George has charged his players ahead of the new campaign as the Port Harcourt-based side began preparations for the 2025/26 season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 2022 Nigeria Premier Football League champions began training on Monday ahead of their domestic and CAF Champions League campaigns.

According to the club’s media updates, 25 players attended the first training session at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Monday.

“Rivers United Football Club of Port Harcourt has officially begun preparations for the new season, marking a significant step towards building on their impressive performance in the 2024/2025 football season,” the club said in a statement.

While the club is expected to announce new additions to their squad, Finidi has begun work earnestly with the returning players ahead of the commencement of the season.

“I welcome you back from the offseason break. Now it’s time to get ourselves ready for the task ahead of time. Welcome back,” the coach said via the club’s statement.

In his first season in charge of the Pride of Rivers, Finidi led them to a second-place finish last term.

They ended the season with 64 points after 38 matches, seven points behind leaders Remo Stare, but it was enough to secure their CAF Champions League preliminary round spot.

“We will go back, and be happy about how the season went. It’s not a bad season from what we have done, and all these analyses would be useful for next season.

“We will see where we got it wrong and where Remo took over. We have to give them that commendation. We are happy where we are ending the season, but we will come back stronger next season,” Finidi said at the end of the last campaign.

Finidi, who led Enyimba to their ninth NPFL title in 2023, joined Rivers United at the start of last season after a short stint as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

The 2025/26 NPFL will commence on August 22, while the draw for the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League is also expected.
